Mechanisms of anterior cruciate ligament injury in athletes

Abstract

Sport injury is the main problem that athletes, coach, and team manager must be concerned of. It takes an injured athlete time for treatment rehabilitation and recovery to come back for training or competition. Moreover, it costs highly to solve this problem. The injured of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in knee joint is more common in jumper or unplanned side step cutting. The investigated result shows that elite female athletes are highly at risk of anterior ligament tear. The main mechanisms that cause ACL injuries are the anterior tibial translation, knee valgus at weight acceptance phase, and side step cutting. The motions of peak knee valgus and internal rotation are also the main factors of ACL injuries. Therefore, coaches, sport scientists, and athletes should be aware of planning the training program to improve the sport skills and movement technique to reduce the sport injury risks.
